"My friend owns a restaurant here in Charleston, SC where I have taken my family numerous times for its great food and fun atmosphere. On Saturday February 24th I happened to be in there listening to another friend of mine play an acoustic set. It was a very quiet and enjoyable evening until closing time.

I went to the bar area to say goodbye to some people that I knew who worked there. The bartender was having trouble getting a customer to leave. I stayed in the background and observed. The patron, approximately 25 years of age, was becoming increasingly angry and refused to remove himself from the establishment. Without saying a word to the customer he started threatening me and wanted to fight. I told him that I had enjoyed my evening with no problems and that I did not want any at this time. I said that it would be a good idea to leave so that the employees could get home to their families due to the fact that it was late. He then proceeded to tell me that he was going to kick my ass and that I was a f******* pussy. The young man claimed that he was "Hard Core Military Combat trained through the Marines and the Navy." He also stated "I am a Golden Gloves Champion!" as well. It was obvious to everyone around including him that I was unimpressed with his declarations.

I then became a little more forceful and told him that he must leave the establishment immediately. He became enraged and called me every possible name that one could imagine. I again told him that I did not want to fight him and that he was the better man than I. I said, “All I want is for you to leave the restaurant and go home.” This same sentence was repeated nearly 20 times according to the video footage. The young man then threw a half full drink of Red Bull and Vodka into my face and down my clothes. I still maintained my composure although every ounce of my being wanted to end the situation right there.

He began finally making his way to the door. The man was seemingly calm as if he had had enough. The bartender began walking directly behind him. Without any kind of warning he whipped around and threw the bartender aside almost knocking him over. Being only a few feet away he charged where I was standing, and I immediately was ready for the fight. I clearly saw that he did not posses a weapon. He called me a pussy and told me that I was afraid of him. I put my hands down (I know, bad thing to do it was me being a little arrogant). He then tried to sucker punch me which I allowed to hit the top of my head. I felt his knuckles crunch. I followed that with a straight jab to the jaw and a right cross to his eye (I was aiming for the other side of his jaw. The first one I threw was an absolute bomb i f I do say so myself which left his eye exposed for the punch). When I saw his hands go up I instinctively gave him a Thai kick to his ribcage. He was dazed on his feet. That is when I closed the distance and choked him out to eliminate any further conflict. It was the most humane way I could think of at the time. According to the witnesses they would have like to see some more punishment. They were however impressed with my control and actions in the situation. I told them that was Krav Maga.

It was in talking with the witnesses that I learned he was a “want-to-be” tough guy who had been bragging about how great of a fighter he was all night. He claimed that he was kicked out of the Marine Corps for cocaine use. They also claimed that he had been to the bathroom several times and had suspected that he was using that night. He has spent the rest of the evening to the present in jail.

In reflecting back on this situation I find that I used every possible tactic that I could think of to avoid the conflict and get home safely. How ever, when the moment had arisen, when I absolutely had to act, my training was there for me. It was second nature. It kicked in, and I did not even have to think. I am proud of the fact that I have been so well trained through this great organization.”

Wife Swap Comes to Texas

Krav Maga students Tish and Tony Meeks who train at Krav Maga Sidekicks with Licensee Renee Nolte and her staff were recently featured on Wife Swap.

Below is a short story about their appearance on the show and Krav Maga Training.

Renne Nolte can be reached at msreneenolte@sbcglobal.net .

After many years of writing original music together, husband-wife team, Tish and Tony Meeks launched Texas Party Punk band, 3 Kisses in Austin, TX, in January 2004. The band also features drummer, Josh Tallerine, and bass player, John Amelang.

In the past three years, 3 Kisses have performed over 200 shows for over 200,000 people and recently Tish and Tony were featured on ABC Wife Swap generating the highest Neilson ratings of the show history.

Madalyn Sklar, founder of GoGirlsMusic.com first contacted 3 Kisses about Wife Swap after receiving an e-mail from a casting producer looking for moms in bands. Subsequently, three additional casting producers found the band via the internet and contacted the Meeks family about applying to the sh ow. Tish & Tony seized this opportunity to attract national attention to 3 Kisses.

Their appearance on the show has brought an overwhelmingly positive response to their music, although there are a few things they would have changed about the show…

“Unfortunately, they portrayed us as being uninvolved parents when in fact, the exact opposite is true… Artists and entertainers don’t command the same respect from society as traditional occupations, but our lifestyle actually affords us more time to spend together as a family than other more accepted careers,” says Tish Meeks.

“In fact, we all got involved in Krav Maga at Sidekicks as a family. Benji and Hannah both took karate and Benji loves it… Tony and I loved doing Krav Maga and it really helped keep us focused and centered as well as improving our overall health…

"I am proud to be a part of Sidekicks Martial Arts where both Instructors and students foster a positive and encouraging environment and the stage is set for everyone who chooses to, to succeed." -Tish Meeks; "3 Kisses" lead singer Karate & Krav Maga student & Little Dragon Mom

"Everyone at Sidekicks is encouraging, happy to help you with your individual skills, taking extra time for personal one-on-one training." –Tony Meeks; "3 Kisses" guitarist & Krav Maga student

In addition to their regular tour schedule, 3 Kisses supports breast cancer research by performing at Susan G. Komen Races and Relay for Life events and donating a portion of their CD sales to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

You can hear 3 Kisses music and buy CDs at www.3kisses.com, www.myspace.com/3kis ses and www.3kissesfriends.com.

Winter Camp RECAP

The second annual Winter Camp was held February 23-25, 2007 hosted by Advisory Board Member and KMW Licensing and Force Training Instructor James Hiromasa.

For those who were not in attendance, this weekend was a blast! Originally conceptualized as a way to get a weekend of advanced training without traveling to L.A., Winter Camp has turned into a weekend of lots of fun and exceptional advanced/scenario training.

When James and Shannon Hiromasa began planning the first Winter Camp, it stemmed from a frustration. James recalls, “we are always teaching, and don’t always get an opportunity to get some higher level techniques in a condensed setting without having to travel out to LA.”

First it was just having John W for one day, but they expanded it with more training including sessions with Ryan Hoover’s Extreme Karate trainer Jeff Jimmo . It snowballed with more training and then they capped the itinerary off with a day of fun skiing in the Rocky Mountains.

Between seminars and the ski train, there were roughly 60 participants. 40 people participated training seminars including both reality and sport fighting.

Friday evening began with roughly three and a half hours of Jeff Jimmo’s “Sport Fighting Seminar” focusing on Take down defenses and leg locks. Saturday morning kicked off with fast and furious “First and Second Degree Black Belt Training” with John Whitman. Then for those who had concealed weapons permits, James taught a two hour “Higher Force Options for Civilian Seminar.”

Saturday continued with Jeff Jimmo “Reality Fighting Drills” including sneaky fight tactics. Saturday ended with John Whitman teaching a scenario base d seminar, “Cold Weather Weapons Defenese.” This might be the most unique scenario based training of the weekend. Participants wore heavy restrictive winter clothing and gear bags. Under these restrictions, executing knife and gun defenses posed a lot of issues for control and redirection. John Whitman worked through these restrictions and all participants trained in the snow on these techniques.

Sunday was lots of laughs and great company as participants rode in a private ski train car up the slopes of the Rocky Mountains to the summit of Winter Park. The train ride included free breakfast and coffee while sitting back and relaxing with Krav Maga instructors and students.

While at Winter Park, there were lots of options for entertainment and relaxation: ski, snowboard, snow mobile tours and hanging out at the ski lodge. Heading back down the hill might have been more entertaining than the beautiful ride up as everyone told their favorite stories of their day on the mountain while sipping down hot drinks and alcoholic beverages.

Overall, Winter Camp was fulfilling weekend of excellent training and one of a kind networking opportunities. James mentioned he learned a lot from networking time on the train ride and in the casual hours of the weekend; “Just sitting on the train I got other great ideas for marketing and promotions just from networking in casual conversation.”

All in all it was a full weekend of training and camaraderie; a weekend that hopefully more instructors and licensees will join years to come.

When asked, “what factors affected how you scheduled this weekend of training and fun,” James responded, “the only limitation is your imagination.”
